Should AKC Attend HUNTE Corp. conferences? 87% said NO!!!

These selected comments reflect interesting viewpoints.

Nona BauerAKC should NOT attend commercial breeders' conferences!  It send a clear message that AKC in some way supports those operations.  Their attendance only serves to reinforce the idea that AKC's primary concern is those registration fees and not the welfare of the purebred dog.

Bonnie Hale NO - There are enough "show mills" and BYBs who raise less than sterling dogs, why should AKC have  anything to do with commercial breeders ?

Virginia Dimick I do not support AKC  promoting Commercial Breeders, (who only breed for money, not for quality dogs or their welfare) or attending any of their functions.

Stella Carter NO - Oh sure, like attending a crime so you cold maybe talk the robber out of doing it. Who would buy that rationale?

Karen Sandvold: NO - AKC should not appear to support commercial breeders. Either AKC will lose even more credibility or Puppy Mills will gain credibility - or both. If AKC continues to support the Puppy Mills, they should not be surprised to find a more ethical registry surfacing.

Rene AllegriniNO!!  It's about time AKC stopped worrying about the money they'd be loosing to other registries and worry about the preservation of the purebred dog and the many fanciers that have deicated their lives to their preservation.  These same people have remained loyal to a fault to the AKC.

Harold Hagar   YES - Why shouldn't they attend? Do you think the AKC is bad the reason they should not attend the HUNTE Corporation meetings?

Charbatt NO!!! When will the madness end?????

Pamela Liddy  UNDECIDED - I am torn on this question - I in no way want AKC to even appear to support them but how else can they keep apprised of what is going on?

Tam Cordingley: I feel we can't hope to educate and, incidentally keep an eye on the puppy millers, unless AKC has a presence.  I also feel inspections should be beefed up and the so called high volume breeders should be held also to high standards of identification and care.

September 2004 Delegates Meeting re AKC Booth.  Ricky Blackman, Clumber Spaniel Club Of America Delegate, asked for AKC’s justification for having a booth at the Hunte Corporation conference.  Tom Sharpe responded as follows “…. They will have about 1,500 breeders at this conference.  Many of them use the AKC services.  I’ll be out there.  We also have Steve Robinson, the Director Of Executive Inspections.  We’re there to reach out to people we see day in and day out doing their normal jobs, while we are doing inspections.  We talk about our service as an educational component of the inspection program.  Does that answer the question?”

There was discussion on another matter and then Pat Laurens returned to the Hunte Corp. by noting “at least one board member is listed as speaking at that conference….”  She goes on to state that she would prefer the booth not be there and “I would like to go on record as saying I don’t think we should be giving too much credibility to broker conferences.”

Dennis Sprung, President immediately closed the discussion and the meeting adjourned.

How do you feel about this?  Should the AKC attend and speak at dog broker and commercial breeder conferences sponsored by Hunte Corporation?  This is not the first time: For background on this worrisome - or watchdog - presence at the puppy mill conventions, go here and backtrack.

Thank you to all who took time to vote.  Your response was overwhelming! Good points were made and we agree that AKC should oversee that end of its business income if in fact, that is now to be the primary registration income.  It appears that is the case so in that regard, everyone would probably agree that they should do more than maintain a presence but should in fact, hold High Volume Breeders to the same standard as Show Breeders!
