AKC Cut-rate Invitation To Puppy Mills

When this letter came to the Newsdesk, we thought it was an “urban legend.”  It is not only factual, AKC's follow-up response is equally shocking.  The special rates and offers soliciting puppy mill and high volume breeder business were discussed at the Delegates meeting.  Ask your  Delegate where he/she stands.  Poll your club membership.  There is little we can add to this letter other than highlighting. The AKC letter speaks for itself.

February, 2006

Dear (insert breeder name here)

We value your business and the work you do as a breeder. In appreciation of the dogs and litters you have registered with us, we want you to be the recipient of a new special breeder service.

If you have any older dogs or litters that were not registered within the required time frame, AKC would like to waive the late fees for registering these individual dogs or litters. By mailing or faxing your applications directly to me, I will ensure that your applications are completed quickly and at no additional cost to you.

If it would be easier for your to fax your applications to the AKC rather than mailing them, please fax them directly to me at:

Fax: 919-816-4261

I will make sure that all our applications are processed immediately and mailed to you the next business day. Also, if you mail or fax more than 4 litter applications at one time, I will have them mailed back to you by an overnight mail service, free of charge. This new special breeder service includes all current applications, as well as late applications.

At this time, we cannot waive late fees for applications processed online, so please fax or mail your late applications directly to me.

Feel free to give me a call if I can be of any assistance with this special breeder service, and remember to look for more services designed especially for you in the near future.

Sincerely,

David Roberts

(note, stamped in big, bold letters across the top, it says

"A token of appreciation for you, our AKC breeder”

Well, not having just fallen off of the turnip truck yesterday, I picked up the phone to call and disprove this letter as Internet folklore.  OH CONTRAIRE. I spoke with a lovely lady named Hope, who is Mr. Robert's Admin Assistant.  She confirmed the letter was sent to everyone having more than one litter. Let me show you just how MANY kennels there are out there. ARE YOU READY???

Visual Overview of USDA-APHIS Licensees

Hope told me she was only in the registrations office. She told me that AKC inspects the dogs they register and these dogs are all safe and cared for well.  I told her that they are sending deaf, dumb, and blind inspectors out there if this was the case.

I told her that we have THOUSANDS of AKC papers...belonging to Bichons that had eyes hanging from sockets, tumors that had burst, and numerous missing body parts.

She told me to report any abuses to:

This is what we got back.

Dear Ms. Drown,
Thank you for your correspondence and concern. The American Kennel Club (AKC) accepts written, signed complaints, which contains direct information to support allegations of AKC rules violations. Please provide additional information to assist me in evaluating your complaint.

Your prompt response is appreciated. I would also recommend you contact the sheriff of the county in which you discover conditions of cruelty/neglect.
Sincerely,
Steve Robinson

CALL THE SHERIFF???

Hmmm...let me be perfectly blunt here. We have called the Sheriffs. More times than we can count. Our attorneys have called the sheriffs. They have faxed the sheriffs. They have sent certified letters to the sheriffs.

The Sheriffs are oft times RELATED to the kennel owners, and if they aren't they usually don't see anything wrong with "havin' a couple hunerd dogs out back."

Folks, there is one thing that will put the mills out of business, and only one thing.

WHEN THE PET SHOPS GO OUT OF BUSINESS, THE PUPPY MILLS WILL FOLLOW SUIT. THEY CAN'T MAKE ENOUGH MONEY SELLING OUT THE DOOR OR ON THE INTERNET TO KEEP THEM GOING.

Hmm...so you ask, why do people buy puppies in pet shops???

BECAUSE MOST OF THESE PUPPIES HAVE AKC PAPERS.

Yes, it may be a New York pet shop, and the puppies may have come from the back woods of Missouri, but AKC IS A RESPECTED DOG REGISTRY..THEY PUT ON THOSE NICE DOG SHOWS....IF AKC ENDORSES THESE PUPPIES..AND THE KENNELS FROM WHENCE THEY COME, THEY MUST BE OK, RIGHT???

Editor’s note: A current example of AKC’s failure to do more than cursory inspection may be drawn from this Wolf Arrested headline – 337 counts against Wolf and Trottier.  Michael Wolf was a very well known Peke Breeder and top toy group handler a few years ago.  Ron Menaker, CEO of AKC explains away the disgrace of Wolf’s arrest in a prompt press release, turning it into a positive for AKC’s support of PAWS.  Mr. Menaker's statement is contained in our coverage of the arrests but interestingly, they were last inspected in May 2004 as High Volume Breeders (registered 94 litters in two years!) and then Wolf (not Trottier) was suspended for six months for incorrect or faulty record keeping.  He was then reinstated....

DoodleDog's pup is well trained!  Just copy and PASTE THIS LINK into a REGULAR email message, then select as many recipients as you want!!   Right from your contacts list.  This puppy can handle it!  He's his daddy's boy.  Cool eh?  He's here to help you share the news.... and he's not for sale!
