Unaligned News For The Dog Show Fancy

Two Against One - Sept. 3, 2002 Editorial
Show Breeders - Commercial Breeders - No Breeders AKC’s HVBC says Show/Hobby Breeders make up about 12% of registrations. Diane thinks it’s only 8% so let’s say 10%. That elite 10% includes Performance Dog breeders, i.e. Field Trial, Herding, etc. My guess is 2% includes notably “bad” or irresponsible show breeders so we’re now down to about 5% representing “us”.In the group we loosely call Commercial Breeders there are puppy mills churning out incredible numbers, yard or kitchen breeders who produce on a smaller scale but derive all or part of their living from dogs, and the “accidental” breeders who tried one litter and say “never again.” I flunked math but no matter how we run the numbers, it looks like over 70% of all registered puppies come from this group.Lastly, there are the No Breeding people. They carry placards, go to rallies, destroy laboratories, let show dogs out of their crates to be humanely killed on the interstate, get TV time to rant about how kids would be better off to drink beer than milk (!!) and how Rats Have Rights. We think of them as whackos, humaniacs, fringe elements, animal rights activists, ALF or PETA fanatics, and they might be likened to Muslim extremists. They can, they have, and they will hurt us. Little by little, they are blowing up our institutional skyscraper along with our constitutional rights. How many of them are there? We’ll explore that next month. If there were two bills on the House floor, one that banned breeding (as has already happened in some cities) and one that opposed that bill, which one would you support? Okay, that’s a no-brainer. So with which two groups would find yourself in agreement and alignment? Shivers run through you? Too bad, read on… So if we are busy throwing rocks at the Commercial Breeders, and they are busy condemning us because as has been pointed out, they feel unfairly maligned and short changed by AKC and the ignorant elite, WHO IS FIGHTING THE NO-BREEDING CROWD?What are we doing? We are standing around at dog shows shooting ourselves in the foot! Trish Kanzler is one of the few exhibitors that ever unloaded on me about the Animal Rights group. Read Patti’s book on the Highjacking Of The Humane Movement. STOP. Think. Like it or not, the High Volume Breeders are here to stay - unless we all sink in the same ship! We must stop wasting our energies on the wrong enemy. We better roll up the heavy artillery with which to fiend off the No Breeding Movement. Sound radical? Then take up knitting as a hobby. And plan to do so with synthetic yarn, not silk. When asked “what’s your position?” on this or that, I take that as the ultimate compliment to the objective reporting done by TheDogPlace.com. On the hypocrisy that pervades our sport and on the future of what our Science & Advisory Board has devoted hundreds of years to, it is time to take a stand, a position. We are going to thoroughly explore ourselves, the enemy, the HVB, and the AKC. I promise you more information next issue. I ask that you lay down your preconceived notions and pick up your brain for that is the one weapon you will need if we are to succeed in this battle! Barbara (BJ) Andrews, Editor
