Greater Daytona DFA 2009

Volusia County Fairgrounds at Deland, FL included Specialties: Mid FL. Havanese Club, FL. West Coast Doberman Pinscher Club, Central FL. Polish Lowland Sheepdog Fanciers, and Mid FL. Golden Retriever Club, w/Jacksonville Dog Fanciers' Assoc.

The Greater Daytona Dog Fanciers' Assoc, Inc. held their yearly two shows the first weekend of 2009.  A four day cluster, always the first weekend of the new year and in conjunction with Jacksonville Dog Fanciers' Association, Inc. The GDDFA holds their shows in Deland, FL..  GDDFA was also celebrating their 100th show on the 3rd, with cake for all the attendees and lovely group and BIS trophies.  They have 45 members and sponsor other dog related events, such a obedience and conformation classes.

Janet Stasiak-NarushkaThere was a special booth of past winners photos which was set up by charter member Janet Stasiak-Narushka. Janet joined GDDFA in 1977. She lives in Ormond Beach, FL, which is near Daytona Beach. Janet judges Golden Retrievers and is a provisional judge for Labradors and Junior Showmanship.

Hanging from the ceilings were flags with a beautifully painted dog on each one. Janet explained that the members Submitted photos of their show dogs and the club hired an artist to paint the dog image on material. Janet's dog was represented by her Golden Retriever, Scotch. There were several dog flags, a few others were the Chinese Crested, the Bulldog, the Pug.

Deland is a smallish town of 26,000 permanent residences, but when Daytona, only 25 miles NE, is having a special event, Deland's population sores to 70,000. Many dog show exhibitors stay at the Howard Johnson's which is the closest hotel to the show site. The site and the hotel is pretty much out in the country. Example, a photo of our parking lot visitor, just in case the city folks don't know, this is a Armadillo.

Jane ForsythJane Forsyth - HandlerJudging for the Daytona show from Pinehurst, N.C., was Jane Forsyth, the other half of famous handler, then judging team of Robert and Jane Forsythe.  As you walked into her ring, there was a full size likeness taken when she was a professional handler. Jane Forsyth has been judging since the mid 1970's and has seen many changes. She is ready to give full attention to the new AKC class, Amateur Owner Handler Class, just as she gives the other classes. She feels the word Amateur may be misleading. The class is for non professionals, not Limited to beginner handlers or dogs new to the ring.Frank Sabella

Frank Sabella - Handling

Frank T. Sabella was judging in his home state of FL and seemed relaxed and enjoying himself. His handler likeness poster was also just outside his ring. Mr. Sabella has been a judge since the mid 70's and has also written at least three books. "Your Poodle" --"the Art of showing dogs" and "Your Poodle, Standard, miniature and Toy.  Other images I saw were Mr. Robert Forsyth and Mrs. Michelle L. Billings.

From Ruskin,Fl, Mary Ann Griffin was showing one her Tibetan Terriers. Mary Ann has Mary Ann Griffinbeen an owner handler for 32 years, starting with an Afghan.  She is an elementary school teacher and plans to retire at the end of the 2010 school year. Mary Ann loves to travel and you might see her in any state in the USA. She has never bred a litter, after she finishes showing one of her dogs, they are spayed or neutered and continue to be one of her loving family.

To celebrate the 100th show the club set up a special area for the show photographs.

Many out of state exhibitors and locals to Brooksville, Florida. Brooksville is a small town that was selected Florida's Outstanding Rural Community in the year, 2000. The shows are fabulous there.  Brooksville has an estimated population of 10,000 and was founded in the mid 1800's. It is only 15 miles east of the Gulf of Mexico.  I can honestly say that most of the dog show population has not been in the township of Brooksville. The show site is in the country, just a few miles from Interstate 75 and 45 miles north of Tampa.

Due to many site problems four local clubs got together and after 5 years of looking, they bought the now fenced, 50 acres, in November 1998. Pasco Florida Kennel Club, Tampa Bay Kennel Club, Clearwater Kennel Club and Inverness Kennel Club held their first four show cluster in January 1999.

The Manatee Kennel Club joined in a couple of years ago, making it 10 shows in 11 days. The rings are all outside on green grass and for this year the weather should be suitable for most everyone. The weather man is predicting rain the 11th, 12th and 15th. But like all weather reports, they change, so you just prepare for hot, cold, windy and rainy weather. The clubs do provide two large grooming tents, several clean porta-potties. The food court has a good variety of foods. This year they are offering a reserved ten day parking spot. And of course vendors close by. Lots of parking space and parking attendants to show you where there are spaces available.

This is the 10th year, and the shows are now run like that expensive motor home you are saving to buy... The rings are large, usually 4 large tents for exhibitors to wait their turn to show off the reason they are attending one of the largest dog clusters in the southeast. I'll do a full report for the next HEADlines.  Be sure and look me up when I have the camera.  Hope to see everyone there winning and having fun!
