AKC Judge M. J. Cohen
slapped by PA law based on the defeated federal PAWS Law. Cohen
is currently licensed for Great Danes, Lakelands and Miniature
Schnauzers and Junior Showmanship. His Coopersburg PA kennels were raided by
dog wardens June 11th. They found 69 dogs including
puppies. They must have had access to his
breeding and/or financial records because it was reported that Cohen sold 37
puppies since January of this year.
The
PAWS law only affected breeders selling 25 or more dogs
but PA requires anyone who “keeps
or transfers more than 25 dogs per year to have a kennel
license.” Cohen was issued a cease and desist order under the
new Dog Law statute prohibiting him from euthanizing, buying or
selling any dogs.
Cohen
could be charged with care and condition violations. Susan
West, the Bureau of Dog Law Director, said "Pennsylvania's new
Dog Law is clear about proper kennel conditions" which raises
the question of why charges weren’t filed at the time.
Perhaps there were no valid “condition” violations and this
is meant as a warning to Pennsylvania’s puppy mills, the number
of which could exceed Missouri puppy mills. In fact, it makes
one wonder why and what initiated the search warrant. Mr. Cohen
is also an attorney.
California Rabies Bill
on
the hot list according to Kris Christine,
Founder of
www.RabiesChallengeFund.org
who reported that the Deputy Director of the
California Department of Public Health sent a letter to
legislators opposing the revised medical exemption bill AB 2000,
which The Rabies Challenge Fund supports. The Health
Department letter states:
"There is no scientific evidence that
canine rabies vaccines are associated with severe or a high rate
of vaccination reactions. ...Modern canine rabies vaccines are
safe ...."
Apparently the director is in the wrong department
because she obviously is uninformed about vaccine safety.
She should subscribe to HEADlines and review the extensive
series we are running by
vaccine authorities from around the globe!
Flea & Tick Prevention Warning:
There
has been confusion since the EPA issued a carefully couched
warning on “Pet spot-on products”. The warning was not about just one
product as some people believed. It was about the rising death
toll from all such products and obviously, it was downplayed by
EPA which is pretty much its own regulatory agency. The
reported reactions to spot-on applications of flea and tick
treatments nearly doubled between 2007 and 2008. Estimates of
adverse reactions are expected to climb when 2009 figures are
released and particularly this year which promises to be a
banner year for fleas and ticks due to weather conditions.
If
you have a cat or a small breed, don’t count on the EPA
directive for weight calculations. Call your vet to be
sure or go online to vetmed. For more safety info and
applications, go directly to the
Flea and Tick page.
AKC Out Of Business?
DVM
(vet) magazine headlines
AKC
will be “Out of Business by 2025?” The Terrierman reports “Between
1992 and 2008,
AKC registrations declined by more than 55
percent, and a 'best fit' trend line done by the magazine
suggests the organization will be gone by 2025 unless a drastic
change is made.”
He
provides charts and credible information, summing up with this
observation “If
we look at AKC registrations per capita,
the decline is even steeper -- a 61% decline in registrations
over the same period of time.” We rarely link off site but
