NEWSBITES: SUPERFOODS, ISLAM-ISIS, DOGS CATCH BUSSES

Digestible, Delectable Dog News Tidbits November 2016

SUPERFOODS FOR DOG OWNERS:: Dog breeders, particularly exhibitors, lead busy lives. It takes high-octane fuel to keep our motors running so first, a list of nutrient-dense foods for people and pets. Then, when you feel fortified, read how clever city dogs can be and above all, words of wisdom about Islam from one of the world’s greatest leaders.

THE DOG PRESS NEWS BITESCOFFEE: is loaded with antioxidants that reduce your risk of chronic disease, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Coffee also reduces risk of certain cancers, particularly those of the stomach and esophagus. Skip the cream and sugar and double the antioxidant benefits by alternating it with GREEN TEA (honey and lemon) which will pick you up just as well as coffee when you need a lift before Best In Show!

WALNUTS have almost twice as many antioxidants as most foods and in addition they contain high levels of heart-healthy vitamin E and Omega 3 fatty acids.

SWEET POTATOES, healthier than white potatoes and loaded with vitamins, they are now being added to premium dog foods. Yams help protect the immune system and dogs relish them! Note that potato skins contribute more fiber than a cup of oatmeal.

CHOCOLATE! It’s rich in flavonoids, can decrease blood pressure and cholesterol levels and may reduce likelihood of heart attacks and strokes in high risk individuals. A tiny taste is okay for your pet.

GARLIC, a powerful antioxidant, antimicrobial, and can help ward off heart attacks and strokes. If you worry about bad breath, take garlic capsules. Dogs love the smell/taste so indulge your pet with a sprinkle of garlic powder on his food.

YOGURT is an excellent snack. Greek yogurt tops the list of live cultures good for the heart and it helps prevent high blood pressure. For you and your dogs, yogurt is a simple tasty way to maintain good bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.

BLUEBERRIES have become costly since being proclaimed as one of the top disease-fighting foods. Blueberries are worth every penny - reducing the risk of heart attack by about 33% and slowing down the onset of memory.

WINSTON CHURCHILL ON ISLAM: Received from Hal Gantt, source Wikipedia. Sir Winston Churchill was a brave young soldier, a brilliant journalist, an extraordinary politician and statesman, a great war leader and British Prime Minister, a prophet in his own time. He died on 24th January 1965, at the grand old age of 90 and, after a lifetime of service to his country, he was accorded a State funeral. Here is his speech which forewarned of today’s ISIS-ISIL threat.

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy.

The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement, the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.

No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome." Sir Winston Churchill; (Source: The River War, first edition, Vol II, pages 248-250 London).

CITY DOGS ON BUSSES: Dogs that “catch a bus” or train are not unknown and instances have been reported here in the states. Eclipse, a black Labrador, rides the bus to and from the Seattle WA dog park and other interesting places. She usually goes with her owner but when he took too long to finish a cigarette, she jumped on the bus by herself. Apparently it didn’t take her long to figure out how to do it again. "She gets on the bus without me, and I catch up with her at the dog park," said Jeff Young, who owns the dog. "It's not hard to get on. She gets on in front of her house and she gets off at the dog park, three or four stops later."

According to ABC news “Some of Moscow's stray dogs have figured out how to use the city's immense and complex subway system, getting on and off at their regular stops. The human commuters around them are so accustomed to it that they rarely seem to notice.” Dr. Andrey Poyarkov, a biologist who has studied Moscow's strays for 30 years, told ABC News "In Moscow there are all sorts of stray dogs, but... there are no stupid dogs."

Indeed, this train and bus riding phenomena has become commonplace around the world. We may not speak Russian or Chinese but apparently the dogs have some way of sharing the mass transit secret in dog talk! Don’t ever underestimate your dog.
