VOTE!!!
Or The AR Folks Might Just Get Their Way.

by Sandi Coy

I received a most interesting missive from my council-person today. This is a man that voted "yes" to a bad kennel law, so just guess what my vote for him will be? As I am cheerfully voting for his opponent on Nov. 7th I will sing out that my dog votes. That's right ladies and gentlemen, my dog does vote!

The letter said and I quote "we are losing confidence in our leaders and in our democratic form of government. Some of our national leaders are feeling like they are above the power of the people.

A voter turn out of 3 in 10 is common. When it is possibly (his misspelling not mine) for 16% or less of a population to choose the direction for all we can't be sure the direction we are headed is were the majority want to go."

So what does that mean to us? Plenty, Animal Rights groups have a lot of folks that do go out and vote.

The more the Animal Rights folks vote the less my animals and my rights are taken into account. We must remember that the AR folks have reached out to the "young voters" out there that are looking for a cause.

Organizations like PeTA and HSUS have some really smooth talkers that are "flashy". They reach out to the stars and tell them it will help their "career" if they are seen as a "kind and gentle person who loves animals and wants them to have better lives." They will draw the younger folks in from the time they are in school with wonderful groups like PeTA for Kids; of course part of that is telling the children that mommy and daddy are killers, because they eat meat, or they hunt. These issues are all tied together but the truth of the matter is they DO reach the young voters who think it is "cool and hip" to be for animal rights. Most of these folks are truly for animal welfare but have been fooled by Peta and HSUS.

We as responsible animal owners need to do our best to stop this type of nonsense. The best way is to let our legislators and our fine folks in all the different offices that we are not for Animal Rights but are for the welfare of animals and we will no longer allow our rights and privileges to be usurped by the Animal Rights wing-nuts. Just how much of that 16% of the population are actually AR? My guess from looking at the officials taking PAC monies from these groups is that it must be pretty high.

If we do not use our votes then we have only ourselves to blame. I for one do not want the ARs deciding how our animals are going to be kept, or have my animals be denied to me.

The animal rights groups have millions of dollars to throw behind their candidates. They have millions of dollars to spend on slick add campaigns. What do we have? The love of our animals and the determination to try to make things better for our animals. Many folks are out there fighting for our rights with nothing more than that. We have no "war chest" we have, as my grandma would say "intestinal fortitude"

(and grandpa would say guts).

We need to make the effort to vote. If there is no one on the ballot to vote for, then by all means vote for Mickey Mouse as a write in. This is counted and the folks who are in "power" will know that we are not happy with what they are doing. As I talk to the fine folks who come to my home and ask for my vote, I ask them about animal issues. I don't care if they are running for a position that has anything to do with animals or not. You can believe that I will not be voting for anyone who has any AR tendencies. We need to get more politically active if we plan on keeping our animals. VOTE!

If you are not registered to vote then go to your clerk and get registered. It is not too late yet. If you are registered to vote then it is time to make the effort and get out and vote. If you don't drive call your county clerk's office - they usually have fine folks that will come and get you and take you to vote.

If you have to ride a horse to get there then by all means do so.

Over 50% of all American households own animals and in fact most own dogs. This is our chance to make a difference! Just think how the elected officials would sit up and take notice if all the dog owner's out there DID vote. Over 50% of Americans! WOW! BSL and MSN would both be things of the past. Yes we do have the power, we just have to use it. How simple to walk in and vote. And if the voter people offer you one of those new fangled computer voting machines I would say, "No actually I prefer the old fashioned way." It appears that the new computer program can be tampered with and no one would ever know not even the programmer that created the thing. Who should you vote for? I personally try to find the most animal friendly candidate I can, or I find someone I think my grandpa might have voted for. My grandpa was a pretty smart man. The party line is not the way to go. Voting for one party straight down the line may just cause you to inadvertently vote for someone who does not have your pet's best interest at heart. I challenge each and everyone who is reading this to VOTE! Who out there wants to accept my challenge?

Editor's Note: Sandi Coy is the voice of authority.  As I read this, I couldn't help thinking of demographics; are most non-dog owners urbanites? At the risk of stereotyping, I wonder how many of those "voters" rounded up each year and escorted to the polls are homeless, druggies, or welfare recipients?  Persuaded to vote as told, or motivated to vote in a self-serving way, are they unknowingly voting for the most AA supportive politicians?
