DIAMOND RECALL – AGAIN
Throw out expensive pet food or risk feeding ii Salmonella contaminated dog food? It’s a no-brainer! Salmonella has also sickened people.
May 5, 2012 |
TheDogPress.com Recalls started again in April 2012 and continue to expand but reports of people sick with salmonella were received by the Center for Disease Control in August of 2011.
The CDC traced the bacteria back to dog food manufactured by Diamond Pet Food in their Gaston, SC facility. Some pet food makers are notorious for not notifying the media, retailers and consumers that they have made a dangerous or bad product.
When there were only half-hearted warnings "not to feed chicken jerky dog treats from China" coming from the FDA, a consumer urged U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) to go to bat for people and their pets. In February, 2012, Senator Brown wrote to the head of the FDA, Dr. Margaret Hamburg and asked her to explain the FDA procedure for alerting consumers, retailers, and manufacturers. He also wants to know why the FDA has not halted the import of risky products and urged them to stop allowing chicken jerky treats to be imported from China.
Since we all want some answers, perhaps we must contact our Senators concerning the Diamond Pet Food Recall and urge action. And, there must be some accounting for the recalled products so they do not end up at a liquidation website like the 2007 recall apparently did.
We must also not forget how long it took for news of melamine{1} poisoning to be exposed to consumers. And since a baby was reported as one of the victims of this batch of contaminated pet food, we might surmise that if a pet were infected, that is likely where the baby got salmonella - unless he was allowed to play in the pet food dish.
We get mad when the dog food sickens the dog such as when botulism{2} is in the food supply! Now we have 14 or more reasons to be furious about salmonella tainted dog food!{3} That is the number of people that the Center for Disease Control reported infected with deadly bacteria from dog food produced at Diamond Pet Food’s plant in Gaston, SC, a facility has been no stranger to the manufacturing of tainted pet food. This time Diamond has caused human illness that has so far spread across a dozen states.
In 2005, this same company made pet food with contaminated grain. That dog food recall was for deadly Aflatoxin which caused many dogs and cats to die. Instant Information on ii Aflatoxin Symptoms. The food was reported to have been shipped to 29 countries.
Since there are home test kits available for everything from urinary tract infections to psychosis, it is hard to believe that dog food companies are unable to conduct testing before products are shipped to certify that they are safe from toxins that can harm both people and pets.
The intent of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was to prevent illness by catching problems before tainted food reached the public. Why did it not protect the public from Diamond Pet Food produced at a facility noted for toxic pet foods in the past?
Consumers are the driving force for change. Pet owners must become the driving force that makes pet food safe for dogs, cats, and the people who feed them. It may take another Act of Congress to protect us from pet food. Lawsuits are sure to follow even though the Gaston, SC plant halted operation in April.
NOTE: Most sites fail to provide records on frequency and reasons for product recalls, both of which indicate a company's pattern and safety record. We are assembling a complete, up-to-date list of Pet Food Recall Records.
