How uncanny is it that retired Geauga County (Ohio) Sheriff Dan McClelland, 67, and his "crime-fighting partner Midge" 16 years old, both died on the same day...?

The Sheriff lost his battle with cancer and died in the hospital. Within hours, the Sheriff's partner, little Midge, died at home. Who would dare say it was "coincidence"? What do any of us know about the "afterlife"?

Does the God we believe in allow animals in Heaven? For many of us, it would not be Heaven without the animals He created. In fact, many religious scholars believe that God created dogs to keep us honest, to set an example of unwavering love and incorruptible character.

If you were the Creator, you could see the future of earth inhabitants. You would keep an eye on earth among the countless specks in the universe... Surely you looked at the "prehistoric" creatures and updated them with new chromosomes and so the mastodon became an elephant that would willingly serve the evolving humanoids you created.

As the Creator, you would have noticed as eons passed that the many of the animal beings were kinder to their own kind than the human beings were to their species. You would have decided to give humans an example of love with no conditions and loyalty that could not be corrupted. And so God re-worked humans and they became known as "man" and for some illogical reason, "mankind."

But like all master plans, the Creator saw that a tweak here and there would help. The animals stayed free from malice but the two-legged humans were becoming more like the primates and a lot less kind, loyal, and forgiving.

So God The Creator created dog... He probably took a good look at the wolf, a creature without malice, greed, cruelty or deceit. He touched the wolf and shaped it into a dog. But then, being all-knowing, God thought about humans who were without hair and chilled easily, so he made the dog creature adaptable to keeping us warm.

Being God, he must have also foreseen that we would need a model of incomparable loyalty, love and honesty that could not be corrupted so he imbued the dog with those characteristics.

If you think any of this is far-fetched, you don't know diddly about dogs. You never knew about Hachiko’s loyalty, the useful tasks dog perform and the uncountable examples of canine comfort to humans.

How unfair and sad that Sheriff Dan McClelland was deprived of that comfort when he needed it most. But how incredible that only a few hours later, Midge must have accepted what she somehow “knew” and she died at home.

My dear friend Dr. Roberta Lee has been in Heaven since 2015 but as I typed this story, I heard her say “BJ don’t you remember what I told you…?”

Yes, I do. And like most of you, I hope to meet my Best Friends in Heaven. I believe that is where Sheriff McClelland went. They say he was a “good man” who was fair to everyone. I believe that Midge went to be with her best friend.

So when your dog forgives your outburst of temper, when you forget to feed him, when you are “down and out” or just stressed beyond words and you notice he’s sitting there by you… thank God for your miracle.
