Dog-Sense: For All Dog Owners

Weird Weather = Defenseless Dogs

You associate weather records with livestock losses but new world-wide temperature records, floods and tornadoes also wrought high human fatalities.

The weather groundhog “Punxsutawney Phil” seeing his shadow and predicting 6 more weeks of wintry weather is validated by the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) record. “December 2023 through February 2024 was the Lower 48's warmest winter in 129 years.” In fact, the 2023/2024 winter was also one of the wettest on record.

By February 2025 dogs were shedding their winter coats. That added more credence to “global warming” which will be even worse for animals that don’t have A/C… As a dog owner you also know something about the complexities of saving livestock so let’s look at weather events.

First, the “wild weather” assault began April 14 with the Persian Gulf floods causing 33 human deaths. There were tornadoes that caused 31 more deaths in the Midwestern United States. Then more deadly weather hit when a tropical cyclone impacted parts of the Caribbean, the Yucatán Peninsula and the Gulf Coast of the United States before losing its breath.

The Rio Grande do Sul floods in April killed 181 people. Severe floods hit the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul in Uruguay, collapsing a dam. Wind and rain caused the Enga landslide in May 2024 resulting in over 2,000 deaths in New Guinea. In June Hurricane Beryl swept over the Grenada island of Carriacou taking another 70 lives.

No matter where you live, you will never forget Hurricane Helene. In September 2024 (first billed as a “devastating tropical cyclone”) which did incalculable damage to both wild and domestic animals and killed over 300 people, from Florida to North Carolina. Helene devastated Asheville, North Carolina which is a major mountain tourist destination.

The famous Biltmore Estate was flooded and the equally famous red-brick sidewalks were destroyed. In fact, Helene caused three million cubic yards of storm debris in Asheville and destroyed famous beaches in Florida.

Worse than hurricanes because there isn’t time to prepare, tornadoes rampaged the southern U.S. from East Tennessee to Virginia. What caused all this?

Most authorities cite “Global Warming” and point to below-average snowfall in the Upper Midwest and much of the Northeastern United States. While southerners perspire in February and northerners unpack camping paraphernalia, we blissfully ignore the fact that the earth’s average temperature has quickly risen over 2 degrees. Temperatures in Antarctica recently reached 50° F above normal before dropping.

It may just be a glitch in the galaxy and the rest of 2025 will be normal. But … keep your ears up and make sure you have plenty of pet food and if appropriate, livestock feed. If there is a stream or lake close to where you live, take note of it and whether it might be drinkable in a pinch…
