FIRST DOMESTICATED AND MULCH MADNESS
You knew dogs were the first domesticated animal or sheep couldn’t have survived but did you know about mulch madness this spring?
May 14, 2024
DOGS FIRST: New DNA studies reveal that dogs, not sheep, were the first animals to be domesticated. The British Broadcasting Corporation reported “dog domestication can be traced back 11,000 years, to the end of the last Ice Age.” BBC Science editor Paul Rincon remarked that our “best friend" in the animal world may also be our oldest one.”
Previous claims that sheep were the first domesticated animal always made us wonder what protected them from predators… Thank you to the BBC for confirming the obvious - that dogs were the first domesticated species. {Ref #1 below}
Notice to dog owners! If you are spiffing up your garden or flower beds, be aware of “mulch madness” as a potential danger to your dog!
COCOA MULCH: Check your mulch bags for cocoa bean which contains theobromine and caffeine, either of which can be harmful to your dog. The risk of cocoa bean mulch is that it smells like chocolate and dogs will eat chocolate. So what???
In case you are a new dog owner, Cornell Veterinary University warns “one ounce of milk chocolate per pound of a dog's body weight can be deadly.”
The claim about cocoa bean mulch is that dogs who swallow it can have vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heart rate, tremors and seizures. We’re not told how much cocoa bean mulch might be poisonous (a curious omission) so play it safe and keep all mulch safely secured away from children and pets!{Ref #2 below}
