DEADLY JERKY TREATS MADE IN CHINA

The latest controversy as Petco and Petsmart promise to stop selling deadly dog treats, right, later… as we continue to import human foods "Made In China."

He's worried about those deadly jerky treatsIt is not surprising that the FDA won’t protect our dogs and cats from Chinese made products, but the stance that PETCO has taken to stop selling Made in China pet treats seems a bit half-hearted since they don’t plan to stop until the end of the year!

Seriously, how much faith do they expect consumers to have in a promise delayed by 6 months, in which time more pets may get sick or die?  If dogs could talk, they'd tell you they are worried about those dog treats.

The day after the announcement, a local TV station showed these deadly treats being sold by PETCO at clearance pricing! If they want consumers to believe that their actions are in our best interest, then what they should be doing is a complete withdrawal of these products from their store shelves. An even better way to convince consumers would be taking action to ship these bad products back to China!

Within 24 hours of PETCO’s announcement, PETSMART made a similar commitment to stop selling Chinese Jerky treats and they are willing to end sales by March 2015. Wow, what swell companies they are! As long as they can sell what they bought from China at a nice profit they will and when they are out of stock, then they will stop!

It is time for consumers to take a stand. Tell these two corporations that WE THE PEOPLE, NO LONGER WANT ANY CHINESE MADE PET FOOD OF ANY KIND, AND NOT STARTING WITH NEXT YEAR, OR EVEN NEXT WEEK, BUT STARTING AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME!

We should not have to worry that those bad treats will be resold on the internet by liquidators and resellers who buy from those websites. In the melamine case, barrels of recalled pet food were being sold by individuals online and a liquidator had full pallets in large quantities for sale.

We reported what went on with the banned in the USA antibiotic and how the FDA inspector found the Chinese factory using “industrial use only” (not Food Grade) GLYCERIN in the making of those jerky treats. This information was faxed to many senators and even to Tom Vilsack, head of USDA, no action seems to have been taken, thus our pets have not been protected from MADE IN CHINA pet products.

Will the FDA keep singing the same tune while the pet food industry buries itself? Will the $millions upon $millions to be made from Chinese products that sicken and kill pets continue to be what is important to companies and our government as well? Retailers are only a part of the equation. Look at the pet food brands and hold those manufacturers responsible for unsafe products. What these people care about most is their bottom line, so don’t let your dollars be a part of it. In fact, if enough pet owners wrote to the manufacturers and said they are henceforth avoiding all their products in every one of their brands, not just pet products, we would see changes.

One thing we can and should do is buy pet food MADE IN USA and we should buy from retailers who actually care enough to get unsafe products off the shelves immediately. The antibiotic found by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Marketing is banned in the USA, but that did not persuade the FDA that “made in China” Chicken Jerky Treats were too risky for importing into the USA.

Just as with the melamine in baby milk and pet foods, the agency set up to protect the food supply failed to stop what appears to be dangerous imports that continue to kill our pets.

You only need to look at the history of how things get banned from our marketplace. Take prescription drugs for instance. Even when side effects include death the product stays on the market until there are deaths and lawsuits (a boon to lawyers) by which time, the drugs have made tons of money for the manufacturers.

Let’s turn the tables! Stop buying imported products whenever possible and never buy anything Made in China. USA manufacturing is starting to recoup as consumers become better informed, and that includes USA textiles and American made furniture. Let’s help the recovery along. DEMAND MADE IN THE USA and for safety sake, reject any human or pet foods not clearly labeled. Demand it now!

Consumers can become the driving force to stop companies from profiting on our dead pets, imported goods and bad trade policies. Many things have been forced upon us. Let’s show the world that WE THE PEOPLE have the power to stop it!
