If you use whelping aids (raspberry tea leaves are incredible!) dietary supplements, vitamins, or herbal preparations, you better sit down before reading FDA's Plan To Ban...
Oct 2015 Barbara "BJ" Andrews, Editor-In-Chief
In Feb 2005 TheDogPress ran information on the plan to ban supplements. We have excerpted from various sources as background for this 2015 update.
> Your right to choose your vitamin, mineral and other supplements may end in June of this year (2005) following which U.S. supplements will be defined and controlled by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
>The CODEX ALIMENTARIUS (Food Code) is setting the supplement standards for all countries in the WTO. The U.S. President (George W. Bush) and Congress agreed to this take-over when the WTO Treaty was signed. Violations are punished by WTO trade sanctions. CODEX drastically restricts vitamins, minerals, herbs and other supplements.<
We motivated thousands of readers to fight back, as did all health sites. Ultimately, the Food Code was blocked. But now, 10 years later, it is not dead. Before we bring you up to date, here's what happened when CODEX was applied elsewhere.
> CODEX now applies to Norway and Germany, among others, where zinc tablets rose from $4 per bottle to $52. Echinacea (an ancient immune-enhancement herb) rose from $14 to $153 and both are now only by prescription. They are now "drugs". Vitamin C above 200 mg, niacin above 32 mg, vitamin B6 above 4 mg-all are banned over-the-counter as drugs. No amino acids (arginine, lysine, carnitine, etc. = essential amino acids!), essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6, 9, etc.), or other essential supplements such as DMEA, DHEA, CoQ10, MSM, beta-carotene, etc. are allowed.<
You know what works for yourself through supplementing your dogs. There is no placebo effect in animals, it either works or it doesn't. What you many not know is this. Our right to protect and promote optimum health in order to avoid having to treat disease is an on-going war.
The pharmaceutical giants constantly try to limit our access to herbs and natural health products.
Congress has often attempted to regulate "dietary nostrums" by imposing quality and safety standards, giving the FDA the ability to take natural supplements off the market. In March 2003, Senator Richard Durbin introduced the Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2003. The purported purpose was to "protect consumers from dangerous dietary supplements such as ephedra and other stimulants by requiring manufacturers to submit proof that their product is safe prior to bringing it to market."
The assumption that ephedra is a dangerous dietary supplement was pumped up by a well-funded media blitz about the healthy young basketball player who suffered a heart attack purportedly from using "herbal stimulants." The tragedy made good TV coverage but what was suppressed was his known heart defect and his use of prescription drugs.
For over a decade, millions of Americans took ephedra in brand name diet pills with no ill effects.
This editor agrees with the makers of natural supplements and herbals: mainstream media reports are being slanted by their biggest advertiser - the pharmaceutical companies.
So where are we in 2015? Do we need to stock up on our favorite supplements? Personally, I keep a six month supply of those most vital to my health. I take prescription puffers but the most effective breathing aid for me is a totally natural product called Pnumotrophin made by Standard Process and dispensed through licensed chiropractors and Osteopathic physicians.
I survived a lung abscess, two lung-chest surgeries and six weeks of intensive-care hospitalization. My surgeon and doctors were amazed. Dr. Thomas McCloud, who performed the surgeries, told me on discharge-day that he had asked God to guide his hand because the first surgery was among the most "hopeless" he had ever attempted.
I also use and respect other natural, non-prescription medications, including Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM is but one example of herbal supplements that would become unavailable even though it has been used for thousands of years by trillions of people. It is not FDA approved.
The bottom line is, well, the bottom line. The cost to "prove" natural supplements made by Nature and therefore, not patentable, is out of the question. Add to that the low profit in dispensing that which nature provides.
But the ultimate equation is this: if you are forced to use pharmaceuticals because natural supplements, homeopathic and herbal remedies that have survived centuries of “clinical trials” are taken away, how will you treat yourself and your pets?
Here’s some
statistics you can get your teeth into. More than 120,000 hospitalized patients per year die from
Adverse Drug Reactions (see below) and 2,200,000 more need hospitalization
in order to recover. The FDA states on its website "ADRs
(Adverse Drug Reactions) are the 4th leading cause of death — ahead of pulmonary disease, diabetes
There is no need for more FDA control of supplements than is already in place. Instead of restricting natural herbs and supplements, FDA needs to do a better job controlling the extremely dangerous pharmaceutical drugs which are now killing us at the rate of a major airline crash per day! And the fatal adverse drug reactions in animals would be even more shocking IF they were honestly unreported. Veterinarians fear liability so in many cases, pet owners never know what killed their dog.
What can you do? Well, in this election cycle, let your President and Congressional Representatives know how you feel about being sold out to the pharmaceutical companions through bribes, kickbacks, and political favors. Explore "alternative" treatments and health aids instead of obediently trotting to the drugstore (!) with that prescription. The information is out there and remember, what works for your dog (not influenced by pharmaceutical advertising) may work just as well for you. Not suggesting you eat grass (ii why dogs eat grass) but you may want to explore herbal and homeopathic remedies.
