ANIMALS VS. ALIENS
The United States is the largest dog-loving country in the Western Hemisphere with over 98 million dogs owned by a population of about 342,034,432 in 2025.

When my daughter said “Americans are dog lovers”, I was more impressed that she had looked up the facts before making her statement.
I’ve seen how dogs are treated in many counties. Starved, beaten. Eaten… As I debated about mentioning that grisly fact, she handed me a census report showing the United States population at over 340 million and pointed to where it said only 1.1 percent are American Indian or Alaska Native ancestry. I raised an eyebrow. I thought we were talking about dogs.
“That leaves millions of people who may have no allegiance to America. No family, no generational ties, no obligations. That is as clear as glass.”
I couldn’t tell if she was about to cry or curse as she took the census report back from me and read aloud “As of 2025, the USA has the world’s largest immigrant population.” I had no idea where she was going until she said it wasn’t easy to get numbers on the quote, “unauthorized immigrant population in the U.S. for 2025.”
She shook the report at me but she already had my attention.
“Daddy! Obviously, illegals avoid being counted!!! They get free food, free medicine and free housing in what used to be the best hotels before they trashed them!!” I started to comment but she said “Get this! The Migration Policy Institute puts the number of “undocumented” adults at 15 to 18 million. And we worry about stray dogs!”
That hit home. I’ve had to intercede to get veterans the help due to them and for which they paid for with legs, arms, and too damned often, their brains!
Dog lovers work long hours rescuing homeless pets but people who can walk hundreds of miles to come here don’t need our help. I said as much. She gave me a sour look but I let it pass.
More research turned up sources that cited over 18.6 million illegals as of December 2025. I wondered how many more were on the way today…
We decided to take a break, she for a Pepsi and me for more coffee. She poured and I picked up the newspaper and read more about “an influx of law-breakers” that showed Wyoming had only 576,851 people in 2023 whereas California led the nation with 39,538,223.
The paper said the total U.S. population was 331,449,281I and in the next paragraph pointed out that California is easy to breach by beach-front. Yeah, I took that as making excuses for California being so hospitable to illegal immigrants. Florida and Texas are also coastal but have a lot fewer illegals.
Reading on, it said that pets are being killed by hungry, desperate people. People in my area are on alert, taking shifts. We are not asking if invaders are hungry. Thinking out loud, I said "We are looking out for our families and animals and we are armed."
She handed me coffee as I spoke, exclaiming “Daddy!!”
I regretted the whole conversation but pointed out she started it. She took a sip of her soda pop and then announced she was “going to do some more research” and I nodded. I didn’t want to know any more about something I can’t fix. My poker buddies had some ideas but I reminded them we are civilians now.
If it comes down to it, there’s enough of us to hold our own neighborhood. Frank has a couple of giant guard dogs and we all have weapons but this is America, we shouldn’t need such stuff. Maybe I’ll get another dog. I sure miss him…
